The GT Hawk attempted to blend European and American styling cues, with a Mercedes-Benz-inspired radiator grille and a roofline reminiscent of American luxury cars like the Ford Thunderbird. One such model was the GT Hawk, released in 1963. As the years went on, Studebaker introduced several more Hawk models, but they failed to make a significant impact in the market. However, the Golden Hawk’s success was short-lived, discontinued in 1958, and the Studebaker Silver Hawk met the same fate a year later.

It combined luxury features with a powerful 275-horsepower V8 engine. In a desperate attempt to boost sales, Studebaker ventured into the grand tourer market in 1956 with the Hawk series, introducing four different models that year.Īmong them, the range-topping Golden Hawk stood out. To stay afloat, Studebaker merged with Packard in 1954, but this union did little to save the company from bankruptcy.

This 1963 Thunderbird is a great representation of that era. Gone were the high fenders and bulky design, and in were lower, leaner cars hard angles and sleek lines. Vehicle highlights include: Power steering, power brakes, AM radio, clock, console glove box, full size spare, jack and a trunk with some goodies. The floors, subframe, longitudinal pieces, inner rockers are all super solid, the trunk is large, fully lined and clean, and inside the engine bay is clean, original and stock. The underside of this thunderbird is untouched with the exception of serviceable items. The “futuristic” styling is oh so sexy with very pronounced dash and gauges, miles of stainless steel brightwork and trim, and bucket seat and console package that could be featured in an episode of Star Trek. The interior remains largely original and in very good original condition. The chrome and trim are complete, original and consistent with the resto of the car. The exterior paint is deep and glossy, not perfect by any means and not priced as such.

Cosmetically, the car is definitely driver quality but shows quite nice in all areas. It runs, drives, steers and stops very well and can be driven with confidence. The previous owner went to great lengths to ensure the mechanical fitness of all his cars. Mechanically, this T-bird is an excellent driver.

It remains completely stock, except for the American Racing Torque Thrust Wheels (Rear skirts come with the car), and an upgraded steering wheel.

The car is finished in its original code M, Corinthian White over Code 82 Light Blue interior. It is powered by its 390 CID engine, automatic transmission and rear wheel drive. Just out of a private collection, this Thunderbird is an unrestored example that did receive a respray style repaint in 2012 (outside surfaces only, not jams or underside of hood or deck lid).
